This peaceful landscape painting by English artist John Horace Hooper (1852-1906) depicts a picturesque river view with trees and a fishing boat. It’s late summer and the foliage glows a majestic green with a hint of Autumnal hues.

The success of this piece is partly due to its strong composition, which provides two diagonals to anchor the elements. The first runs from the bottom left, up along the riverbank and out towards the furthest hills. While the second starts in the bottom right and extends past the boat, the tip of the trees and onward towards the sky. By adopting this technique, the artist has created a crossing point, which is close to the centre of the scene. It’s a pleasing design that appeals to our subconscious.

Hooper enjoyed this area and painted it often. In 1888, his work ‘Mapledurham’ was shown at the Royal Academy and several other works depict the Thames from different angles.
