In the foreground, a woman is standing by a small boat as she chats to a fisherman. Perhaps he’s just returned after a morning at sea. Behind them, the smoke from a cottage rises skyward, its orange roof creating an accent in the view.
Gude’s work is similar but often imbued with a sense of romantic embellishment. Here, the teacher’s style is evident, yet Rheinemann has avoided romance in favour of simple reality.
Signed/dated and framed.
