It’s an affectionate scene - symbolic of maternal instincts and the love within families. When Bryant produced this, he was recently married and probably living in Eastbourne with his wife. Perhaps it was a commission for a local family or alternatively inspired by prevalent thoughts of his own.
It’s easy to imagine this once hanging proudly in a farmhouse or period home.
