This picturesque 19th-century landscape by Thomas Creswick (1811-1869) depicts a British rural idyll. A shepherd guides his flock along the stones and crags of a well-worn gully. The sheep proceed nervously while a bull waits by a river. On both sides, the rocky scenery guides the eye towards the winding water, which emerges from dense woodland.

Thomas Creswick was a master of the English landscape, working tirelessly to capture nature itself. His works are devoid of elaboration and sketched from life. He loved the countryside and this is apparent in his approach. An affable character with an ever-popular following.
