Fine Scottish Interior Scene Oil Painting By J.P.Downie

Sold by: Prometheus Antiques

A fine oil on canvas interior scene by John Patrick Downie 1871-1945. The painting depicts an interior scene with a man lighting his pipe from the embers of a fire. The quality of the work is wonderful and the details beautifully observed. I love the coffee grinder on the chest of drawers, which itself is missing some handles. The painting is signed to the lower right and dated; the date is somewhat illegible. John Patrick Downie is a highly regarded Scottish artist exhibiting from Glasgow between 1887 and 1940. He was prolific with 118 works hung at the Glasgow institute of fine arts as well as exhibiting at all the other major Scottish academies and galleries. This work is typical of his interiors of the homes of working people, it is however much lighter in tone than most. The painting has been professionally cleaned and is in excellent condition, with some light craquelure in places and a very small repair. The work is mounted in a modern gilt frame with antiqued finish. C.1920....
