This late 19th-century landscape painting by HK Foster depicts a well-worn track carving its way towards a wooded area. It’s a few feet deep and dug in after years of attrition. Perhaps it’s still in use today.

Resting by a cluster of trees, a mother and two children are sitting to eat, picnicking in their favourite spot. While above them, a flock of birds bring contrast to a cloudy sky.

Little is known about the artist, HK Foster, but this is a good example of Victorian landscape painting. It’s a celebration of nature.

The painting is signed in the lower right and housed within a period frame.

Overall size: 38½” x 28½” / 98cm x 72cm

Year of creation: c. 1880

Condition: Overall very presentable. Canvas relined. Frame with some age-related wear.
