Fine Victorian Oil Painting of Saint Michael’s Mount

A fine and dramatic oil on canvas seascape of Saint Michael’s Mount, Cornwall by T.C.Cook. The painting is typical of the later Victorian period with a huge sense of the romantic notion of the power and beauty of nature. The scene is that of a small boat approaching a wreck in a churning sea with the huge and dominating presence of Saint Michael’s Mount in the background. The painting is very capably handled both in composition and technique. The work is signed to the lower right and dated ‘T.C.Cook 1872’. There is little information about the artist but he was a marine artist that flourished in the later Victorian period. He is obviously very capable and it is likely he was a self-taught commercial artist that did not exhibit and thus was not recorded in that way. The painting has had some holes repaired at different times, the repairs are professional and of a high quality with no visible sign from the front. The painting is mounted in a slightly later but still period frame with all original gilding. The whole is a wonderfully decorative and dramatic period artwork that is ready to hang.
