Note how the light falls across the taller sister’s face as she looks down towards her hand. This well observed and intelligent detail guides our eye towards the interaction between them and then finally onto the other sister.
Where do you think the girls are heading? Perhaps they’re dressed for church on a Sunday morning or off to meet extended family? Do they like each other? Is it a moment of affection or is she squeezing her finger?
Carl Meyer often painted everyday family scenes and many included his own daughters. He was also a conscientious artist that tended to depict the most downtrodden in society. He painted with empathy for those who had little and as such was often referred to as the ‘poor man’s painter’.
