This exquisite pair of mid-19th-century Austrian portraits are rendered with precision, careful observation, and plenty of spirit. Easily two of the finest watercolours we’ve ever seen here.

They date to around 1860, which is identifiable via the outfits. During this time, it was fashionable for gentlemen to sport long side whiskers with drooping moustaches, and wear their hair a little dishevelled. And, as we see here, this particular gent looks a tad unkempt and wind-swept. While for ladies, hair was worn with a centre parting often with curls towards the neck. And dresses tended to feature low sloping shoulders that flared out into wide sleeves.

At one point in time, this pair hung proudly in a plush Austrian home and although their identities have been lost to history, their distinguished appearances are as captivating as ever.

Both portraits are housed within later frames and inscribed on the reverse. It’s been suggested that they could be the work of either Franz (1821-1914) or Rudolf Von Alt (1812-1905).
