A mysterious and unusual painting, depicting a skyline of silhouetted trees, rendered in simple earth colours, burnt umber and van Dyke brown, a loose, expressive brushstrokes

The result is a work of art that atmospheric is incredibly modern for its time.

Although unsigned, our painting is almost certainly a work by Auguste Paul Charles Anastasi (1820–1889).

A student of Eugène Delacroix and Camille Corot, Anastasi worked extensively with the school of Barbizon and painted numerous gorgeous views of the forest of Fontainebleau. Although famous as a Barbizon school painter, he also traveled in Northern France, especially in Brittany from where he brought back several landscapes.

Anastasi, supported by his peers, the Art critics and the public had a successful career. He benefited from several State commissions for national museums.

In 1870, Anastasi, like his father before him, became completely blind. Princess Mathilde sheltered him at her Saint-Gratien estate. A sale of his work, organised by his friends, generated enough money to keep him out of need until his passing.

An oil on paper mounted on to panel, the painting measures 18 x 26 cm. The the overall framed size is 27 x 35 cm.
