Description

An extraordinary surrealist composition dating from the 1940s by Jean Janin, depicting a mountain of oversized mushrooms. Janin (1899-1970) was in Geneva, Switzerland, to French parents. He trained at art school in Geneva, then at the Académie Ranson in Paris. In 1923 began to exhibit in Paris at the main annual salons. In 1929, he and the American William Gwinn founded the Children’s Traveling Theatre. He painted Art Deco and surreal figures, often with allegorical themes, and also designed stage sets and wall decorations, creating screens, lacquer panels and even mosaics.

He also designed several posters in the 1920s. Janin belonged, along with artist Pierre Ino, to a group of young Surrealists. The gouache on paper presented here is an excellent example of his work.

The painting is signed at the lower left and measures 27 x 41 cm. The overall size with its original oak frame, features the artist's name and Paris address, rue Joseph Bara, is 48 x 59 cm.
