A charming mid-17th-century Dutch school portrait of a lady wearing a black dress with a white collar and bonnet. This exquisite piece is a window into a time gone by when Amsterdam was alive with new cultural experiences, vast new buildings, and a wealthy middle-class.

Who is this lady? Her identity has been lost over time but she was clearly from a family with means. The portrait has been rendered beautifully by a well-trained hand. Note the veins towards the lady’s temple.

Her outfit fits well alongside other portraits from around 1650 such as this one by Willem Drost (1633-1659).

The portrait is housed within a fine hand-carved wooden frame.

Year of creation: c. 1650

Condition: Overall very presentable. Craquelure and areas of restoration as you would expect with a piece of this age. One area of paint loss on the left hand side. Frame with some wear.
