Staffordshire Bacchus / Satyr Wine Cups Circa 1870

19th century
Description

These four characters are a striking set of mid Victorian Staffordshire Bacchus cups which really evoke the spirit of entertaining and perhaps enjoying the finer things in life - just like the Roman god of wine and pleasure himself - and, as there are four cups in this group it means they can be enjoyed in company!

Each cup stands just over 10cm high, and has a wine coloured rim and base, with gilding to both and the handles - each Satyr's hair is tangled with vine leaves and fruits wound behind his pointed ears.

The face is compelling to look at, with piercing eyes and a maniacle grin - certainly an unusual and magical piece from another era.

All four are in a super 'used' condition commensurate with their age, but with no chips or cracks, and bright and fresh paintwork and gilding - only one cup has a tiny area of paint loss on one of the satyr's red wattles under his chin - please see the photographs to examine the condition of all four.

Please don't hesitate to get in touch if I can provide any further information.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Staffordshire Bacchus wine cups are 19th-century ceramic drinking vessels moulded in the shape of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine, or a satyr, featuring sculpted facial features and vine leaves.

These items were manufactured from press-moulded earthenware or pearlware, decorated with hand-painted polychrome enamel glazes, and finished with gilded accents around the rims.

Authentic pieces feature moulded earthenware bodies, hand-applied enamel decoration with age-appropriate surface wear, fine glaze crazing, and unglazed or partially glazed bases typical of 19th-century production.

These decorative ceramics can be displayed on a sideboard top, arranged within a glass display cabinet, or styled along a mantelpiece alongside period glassware and brass items.

Clean ceramic vessels gently using lukewarm water and a mild non-abrasive soap, avoiding prolonged immersion or harsh detergents that could damage surface gilding and delicate enamel paint.
