Cornish Coast Oil Painting by Hugh Edward Ridge

A striking oil on canvas by Saint Ives artist Hugh Edward Ridge. The work shows the Cornish coastline in black and gold contrasting beautifully with the blue sea and cloudy skies. The painting is worked in thick impasto oils to the fore with finer detailed work in the distance. The painting has been professionally cleaned and is in excellent condition. The work is signed to the lower right ‘Hugh E Ridge’ but not dated. Hugh Edward Ridge 1899-1976 was born in Barnstaple, North Devon and was taught to paint locally. Ridge is thought to have moved to the St. Ives area of Cornwall towards the end of World War II. He was elected to the St. Ives Society of Artists in 1951 and remained a member until his death in 1976. Ridge was also a Committee Member and Chairman of St. Ives Society of Artists. He exhibited widely and profusely including at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and at the Paris Salon. An example of his work is in the collection of the National Maritime Museum.

This piece is framed in the original frame and the whole is in excellent ready to hang condition. C.1950.
