Large Victorian Oil Painting by Thomas Kent Pelham

A fine and large oil painting on canvas depicting a young traveller at rest by the roadside. The canvas shows full length a girl in rural costume leaning on a mossy bank playing with some wild flowers in her hand. The painting is beautifully done and really is the best of this Victorian genre work. The work has been lined and cleaned some time ago but there appears to be no great areas of restoration and the whole is in excellent condition. It has been lined with black beeswax on the reverse of the canvas to support the old lining. The frame is of a superb quality and has some age but is not the original. The painting is signed to the lower right ‘T K Pelham’. Thomas Kent Pelham was a highly successful London painter in the high Victorian style and exhibited between 1860-1891 but little is known about his life. Pelham exhibited at the Royal Academy for most of his career with titles such as ‘A Cornish Mussel-gatherer’ and ‘A Serious Question’ and also exhibited at every other major gallery of the time. His work is held in museums such as Cardiff and others around the world. This painting is an excellent large and impressive example of his work, giving a great English country house look and is ready to hang. C.1870.
