A wonderfully sunny, lightly cubist still life with a degree of abstracting which depicts a straw hat, bowl and flowers in a vase on a table. Subtly shaded, it is an elegant and timeless work that dates from the 1950s or early 1960s..

Signed or annotated Le Poitevin on the verso, painting is attributed to Georges le Poitevin, an artist born in 1912 in Le Havre in Normandy. Le Poitevin studied at the National School of Decorative Arts, and subsequently at the National Academy of Fine Arts in Paris. He was awarded the Abd-el_Tif prize in 1945, and with it, a stipend to work and study for a year at the villa Abd-el_tif in Algiers. Le Poitevin would frequently return to Algeria after his sojourn, acception the position of conservator of the Tipaza museum site in 1962. I believe our painting to have been painted somewhat before this date, in France. Le Poitevin exhibited in Paris, Algiers, Tunis, and Monte Carlo.
