A Fine Victorian Oil Portrait After Frans Hals

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Prometheus Antiques

A fine oil on canvas portrait after the original Dutch golden age work by Frans Hals. The portrait shows a seventeenth century Dutch gentleman dressed in typical period costume with elaborate ruff. The painting is a direct copy of a work by Frans Hals painted in 1633 and titled ‘Portrait of a man in his thirties’. The piece is signed and dated 1889 on the reverse in pencil but the signature is illegible. The original work by Hals was donated to the National Gallery in 1888 and thus this work was most likely to have been commissioned to mark this. The painting is in untouched country house condition, it has the odd mark and patch and slight creases on the canvas from the stretchers behind, none of this detracts from the look of the painting as a whole. The frame is probably the original, it is of the right period, it has some over gilding and is in good overall condition. The whole has a great period look, is ready to hang and gives instant great country house appeal.
