Two fine 19th-century engravings depicting classical scenes from Greek mythology.

The first represents ‘The Abduction of Ganymede’ and is based upon a painting by Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640). Ganymede was a shepherd blessed with such beauty that the God, Jupiter, fell in love with him. Jupiter was so captivated with Ganymede that he carried him away to Olympus after transforming into an eagle.

The second engraving is based upon a drawing by Charles Abraham Chasselat (1782-1843) and depicts ‘Daphnis and Chloe’ - a young couple hopelessly in love, yet too naive to avoid tragedy. The engraving is by ‘Noel’, which probably refers to Charles Francis Noel.

Both are held within good contemporary frames.
