In this utterly charming 19th Century village scene, a woman is looking at her young child with tenderness as they are walking along path near their hamlet.

Impressionist in style, and painted with loose brushstrokes, the painting is reminiscent of the Barbizon school of painting.

In the village of the same name, spearheaded by Millet and Rousseau, painters whose key interest was landscape and the depiction of country life, had created a created an artist's colony.

The oil on canvas is signed L Martin, and dated 1899. While the name "Martin" is so frequent that it is hard to identify the artist with certitude, I believe the work to be by Léonie Martin, a woman artist who studied with Fanny Chéron, and who exhibited at the Paris Salon in the from 1880 onwards.

Measuring 33 x 41 cm, the painting is framed in a Barbizon style frame. The overall framed size is 47 x 54 cm.
