A touching floral still life of humble petunias in a basket by French woman artist Marie Dulout (b. Vire, 13 march 1870). I love the mottled colours of the background, which brings a glow and a distinct art nouveau feel to the painting.

Marie had studied with Francois Rivoire and Eugène Claude, one of the Masters of French Flower painting, to embark on a successful career as a painter of miniatures and botanical subjects. She exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Francais from 1889.

Our oil on canvas, which has been consolidated dates from the late 19th Century. It measures 27 x 35 cm and is signed at the lower left. Stabel craquelure to the left. Presented in its original frame, the overall framed size is 37 x 44 cm
