Victorian Oil Painting Shipwreck Off Bamburgh Castle

A fine and decorative oil on canvas scene of a shipwreck off Bamburgh Castle. The artist has captured the dramatic scene quickly and confidently and I would expect it to be a sketch for a larger work. There are areas of the canvas that appear unfinished and this is very much in keeping with an artist’s sketch. The work is unsigned again typical for a sketch which was made only to work into a full-sized finished piece in a studio. It is not unusual for artist sketches to be later framed. The whole is in good condition and the gilt frame is the original. The frame retains the original gilding but it has had some repairs and is worn. The piece has a great period, untouched look and is ready to hang. C.1870.
