Fine Falconry Scene Oil Painting By Eugène Charpentier

A fine oil on canvas scene of nobles out riding with falcon, stopping to talk to a soldier and his love by Eugene Charpentier 1811-1890. The work is typical of the artist who painted in the historical style, the work is very finely detailed in a wonderful French soft colour palette. The work has been professionally cleaned and a very small tear repaired. The painting is signed in red to the lower left: ‘Eugene Charpentier’. Eugène-Louis Charpentier (1811-1890) studied under Gérard and Cogniet, and became celebrated as a painter of historical pictures. These were frequently battle-scenes, some of which are at Versailles. He was also a portrait painter, and one of his most successful works was a likeness of Georges Sand, painted in 1839. His ''Pupils of the Ecole Polytechnique at the Battle of Paris, March 30, 1814,'' which was exhibited in 1852, is now in the Museum of Boulogne-sur-Mer. He died in 1880.
