The leading French dictionary of artists, describes the work of Märta Leijonhielm (who signed her work "Leijon" ) as striking a balance between figurative images and abstracted forms, between romanticism and intimate classicism ''. It is, as such, both composed and sentimental; pure and whimsical at once. Märta's "Harlequin with a dove" presented here is a wonderful example of this.

Märta Leijon-Leijonhielm was born in Stockholm in 1922, but moved to France in 1949 to study with cubist master André Lhote in Montparnasse. She became a French citizen in 1953. The oil on panel presented here dates from circa 1960, measures 33 x 26 cm and is signed at the lower right. It is presented in a hand decorated frame which is likely to have been decorated by Märta herself. The overall framed size is 42 x 36 cm
