Striking Oak Dresser from Cardiganshire

19th century
Description

This striking dresser was made primarily for display; the unusual, overhanging, or canopied cornice with a pair of pendant finials along with a wealth of hooks along four levels of the rack offer a great stage to show your favourite wares.

The unusually shallow base, just over 15.5” deep, contains five drawers, the top three with mahogany crossbanding which is repeated along the edge of the arched and cockbeaded frieze. The two lower drawers each simulate a pair of short drawers and flank a mahogany frieze with central chequered detail. The wooden knobs are original.

The planked potboard is joined by four ring and wrythen carved front legs and, most unusually, the two rear legs match them rather than being of the more conventional square section form. The ends of the base have a pair of scratch moulded, flush panels. The single piece plinth is shaped in a pleasing, undulating design.

Shown fully dressed in the traditional livery of blue and white plates on the shelves, copper lustre hanging on the hooks and dogs sitting pretty.

Cardiganshire, circa 1820-30.

The dresser is for sale, with and without the ceramics. Contact us for the combined price of the dresser and its contents.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
