19th-century, Portrait Study of a Gentleman - Antique Oil Painting

Description

A fine mid-19th-century portrait study of a gentleman wearing a large necktie, coat, waistcoat and shirt. He’s looking nonchalant and resting his left arm on a chair.

Studies such as this are often more fascinating than finished works as they provide insight into the artist’s process and approach. It’s likely that this was one of several studies completed ahead of a finished work - perhaps it was shown to the sitter for their approval - “how do you feel about this version, Sir?”

The portrait is unsigned but it’s clearly by an accomplished hand. It was previously held in a private collection in Scotland. It’s housed within a good later frame and glazed.

Overall size: 19½” x 21” / 49cm x 53cm

Year of creation: c. 1850

Provenance: England

Condition: Overall very presentable.
