Coastal Scene Oil Painting by David Payne (1843-1894)

19th century
Description

A fine and charming oil on board by Scottish artist David Payne (1843-1894). The painting is wonderfully detailed in the figures on the beach, the boat and cottage, and yet free and loose in the rendering of the sky. The whole has a great feeling of place and time and is a lovely example of the artist’s work. The painting has been professionally cleaned and is in excellent condition. The signature is located to the bottom left, there is apparently no date. The painting is framed in the original gilt frame which has had some minor repairs. The whole has a great period look and is ready to hang. C.1880

David Payne (1843-1894), was born in Annan in Dumfriesshire the son of a Mason. He initially made his living as a house painter before becoming an artist. Payne moved to Derby in 1869 where he became a student of George Turner "Derbyshire's John Constable". Payne became a rural landscape and trompe l'oeil artist. He exhibited at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, the Nottingham Museum and Art Gallery, and was a member of the Royal Scottish Academy. He died in Sheffield in 1894. Payne has paintings in several British institutions including Derby Museum, the Defence Academy and Southampton City Art Gallery.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
