Matissian Nude, Circa 1920, Verso Limpley Stoke, Bath Landscape: Art Deco Period Drawing and Watercolour, Lovely Provenance

1900 - 1920
Description

A double sided graphite drawing and watercolour. While I have chosen to display the Matissian Nude for its sheer loveliness as a recto, but of course, sides could be reversed to show the watercolour of Limpley Stoke Valley near Bath instead.

Although unsigned, both work are by Reginald Goodfellow (1894-1985). They have lovely provenance: their previous owner was a British, Paris-based authority on the art deco period, who was a great champion of the artist.

Goodfellow was a painter, draughtsman and printmaker born in West Kensington, London and brought up in Lambeth, being educated locally. He showed an early aptitude for drawing and was apprenticed to a structural engineer. He served in Mesopotamia with the Royal Engineers during WWI. Afterwards he joined the Ministry of Works as a structural engineer and remained there until his retirement in 1959. He had no formal art training until 1927 when he attended classes at Westminster School of Art and was taught by Walter Bayes. He continued painting while working for the M.o.W. and exhibited once at the Royal Academy in 1939. After his death Michael Parkin Fine Art mounted the show 'Pupil and Master' (Goodfellow and Bayes) in 1986. His work was included in Sally Hunter Fine Art exhibition ' Twenties Veterans', 1988.

Our drawing/watercolour measure 24 x 34 cm at sight. There is some discolouration to the paper and smudge of paint, certainly made by the artist himself. The overall framed size is 44 x 53 cm.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
