Fine Victorian Oil Portrait of a Military Gentleman

A fine quality full length seated portrait of a military gentleman in full dress uniform. The work is beautifully done in oils on card and particular detail has gone into portraying accurately his impressive display of medals. The work is in excellent untouched condition and is signed to the lower right ‘Basebe’. There was a family of artists with the unusual surname of Basebe working in the late Victorian and early twentieth century period, mostly they were miniature portraitist. This is undoubted by one of the Basebe family but with no initial it is difficult to ascribe it to a particular member. The work is framed in the original gilt frame which not unusually for the late Victorian period is then mounted on velvet and boxed in a glass and ebonised wood case. The whole is in excellent condition and has a great period look. C.1890.
