An early 20th-century portrait study of an angel by German painter, Hugo Ziegler (1864-1934). There’s an ethereal quality to this beautiful piece, which is enhanced by its loose brushwork.

Perhaps it’s a study from an old master painting that Zielger observed during his travels. Or potentially an oil sketch to inform a later work.

The portrait is housed within a contemporary ornate handmade frame.

Medium: Oil on canvas laid on board

Overall size: 16” x 15” / 40cm x 38cm

Year of creation: c. 1910

Provenance: Germany

Condition: A few light marks here and there but nothing that detracts. Frame in excellent condition.

Artist’s auction highlight: £1,020 achieved for ‘Die Birken’ at Christie’s in 1990.
