Superb Papier Mache Blotter with Oil Painting of Alnwick Castle

A really superb papier mache blotter decorated with an oil painting of Alnwick Castle. The blotter is of book form with the front and back made of papier mache. The front is a great landscape oil painting of Alnwick Castle in Northumberland with figures. The painting is superb and some of the best I have ever seen on papier mache. The whole is in excellent condition throughout it is almost as if the blotter were never used. The papier mache is protected when in use by mother of pearl studs in the four corners both front and back keeping the painting from being damaged. The interior is lined in red moire silk and the blotter pages are all original. The detail is wonderful the two papier mache sections are united by the most superb tooled and gilded leather. A truly top-level piece of papier mache which is in excellent condition. A similar example with a view of Saint Chad’s Cathedral Birmingham is in the Victorian and Albert Museum collections and is by Jennens and Bettridge which makes it very likely this is by the same. C.1850.
