Fine Watercolour of a Lady with Cherubs by Lucius Rossi

A stunning quality watercolour painting by Italian artist Lucius Rossi 1823-1913. The work shows a lady dressed in a flowing black dress surrounded by cherubs representing love. The artist worked for some time in England as an illustrator and this is almost certainly a work done at this time and for this purpose. Lucius Rossi was an Italian portrait painter who worked and lived in Paris. He first trained as an artist at the Roma’s Academy, San Luca. He left Italy to settle in Paris in 1867, and began to work as a designer for magazines. He later worked for The Graphic magazine in England. His portraits include William Waldorf Astor which is now in the Metropolitan Museum in New York. The painting is framed in a lovely early nineteenth century gilt frame which is in great untouched worn condition. The painting is signed in pencil to the lower right and has been professionally remounted in an asymmetric way to work with the earlier frame. The whole has a great romantic look and is ready to hang. C.1890.
