One cannot but feel cheerful looking at this wonderful landscape by Louis Peyré, which brings us all the warmth and colour of the Mediterranean.
Peyré was born in a village near Montpellier, where he studied at the Fine Arts Academy from 1945. There, he worked notably with Camille Descossy, by whom we also have a painting on offer.
In the 1950s, Peyré moved to Paris, continuing to studying drawing, painting, etching and sculpture at Paris public and private art schools such as the Montparnasse School and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière.
He exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in 1951, at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1968 and at the Salon "Peintres Témoins de leur Temps" in 1975. He had numerous solo shows in the South of France, in Paris and in Germany between 1948 and 2005.
Our painting is an early work by the artist, dating from the late 1940s or early 1950. It has a that great freshness of youth, while already being accomplished and beautifully composed. The oil is painted on jute rather than on canvas, which testifies to the poverty of its time, but which actually lends an interesting and original texture to the work. The painting has been cleaned, re-stretched and tension bands were added.
Measuring 54 x 70 cm, the overall size in an antique frame is 69 x 83 cm. Biographical information courtesy of a website dedicated to the artist.
