Latil participated in the 1965 Paris Biennale, exhibited in 1970 at the Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris, and became president of the Salon of the Jeune Peinture in 1971.
Our picture has a very special story. Latil, who also worked as a set designer, created it for the 1969 film "Castle Keep" by Sydney Pollack, which featured Burt Lancaster and Peter Falk.
Based on a novel of William Eastlake, "Castle Keep" is the story of a hotchpotch group of American soldiers who take shelter at in a magnificent 10th century castle containing priceless and irreplaceable art treasures, during the second World War. The previous owner of the artwork was Pierre Roubaud, assistant director of the film.
I watched Castle Keep and it not manage to spot our painting, but that is likely because all the pictures in the movie go up in flames. Possibly our painting was too well loved by its creator to be sacrificed.
An oil on canvas measuring 71 x 51 cm, the painting is signed or inscribed on the verso "peint par JC Latil pour le film Castle Keep". Presented in a 19th Century frame that has been restored and gilded with leaf gold, the overall framed size is 92 x 62 cm.
