Three Sail Boats at Sea: 1930 Exhibited French Marine Seascape Oil on Paper

1920 - 1940
Description

An atmospheric marine landscape featuring three sail boats on the horizon, by French artist André-Léon Vivrel (1886-1978). Dating from the art deco period, this extremely modern work was exhibited at the Paris Salon des Indépendants, in 1930.

André Vivrel had studied at the Académie Julian from 1910 with Paul-Albert Laurens, and also frequented the ateliers of Marcel Baschet and Henri Royer at the École des Beaux-Arts.

He settled in a studio in Montmartre, only eight numbers along from that of Auguste Renoir, and showed his work for the first time at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1913.

He obtained an honorable mention at the 1920 Salon, and in the same year, two paintings that Vivrel had sent to the Salon des Indépendants were acquired by the French State.

In 1922 Vivrel made his debut at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. In 1932, he won the Deldebat de Gonzalva prize, and, in 1933, a silver medal at the Salon des Artistes Français for Le Temps des cerises.

Exhibiting widely during his lifetime, even alongside Pierre Bonnard and Pablo Picasso at Galerie Theophile Briant in 1933, Vivrel's paintings been shown in this century, as part of the French Naturalist Painters 1890-1950 exhibition at the Fleming Collection in London

Works by the artist are in the Musée Eugène Boudin, Honfleur as well as in the Musée Mandet in Riom.

The painting presented here is an oil on paper measuring 32 x 50 cm and is signed at the lower right. The overall framed size is 41 x 58 cm. The original backing board features the artwork's exhibition label and the artist's biography in French.
