L S Lowry, writing in 1971 observed that Lloyd's work had "attracted much attention... owing to its individual style, its sincerity of approach and its care in execution. It is the result of perceptive observation of certain everyday thing which appeal to the artist revealed in his own personal way." Lowry added that he found them "most interesting and unusual. One of them, a painstaking study of a group of cows so appealed to me that I could not resist buying it." A farmer's son, James Lloyd was born in Cheshire. He moved to Yorkshire in 1950 and took up painting full time at the age of 40. He got to know, and became a friend of Lowry.
