Beverley, Oil Painting Of A Horse By William Eddowes Turner

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Prometheus Antiques

A fine oil on artist board horse portrait of Beverley by William Eddowes Turner (1836-1904). The painting is typical of horse portraiture with the animal front and centre in a stable setting. There is a blanket in the painting which does have the initials ‘Jr’ which would be those of the owner. The painting is signed to the lower left and dated 1889. There is a label on the reverse which gives the name of the horse. It has been professionally cleaned and had some minor pieces of restoration. The work is framed in a period gilt frame which has had some minor repair.

William Eddowes Turner was born in Nottingham, a self-taught artist of animals, particularly cattle, in both oil and watercolour. He exhibited at the British Institution and Suffolk Street and locally in Nottingham 1858-1862. He died at Radford, Nottinghamshire in 1904. He is a highly regarded provincial animal artist.

The whole is ready to hang with a great period look and a quintessentially English country house sty...
