Description

A wonderful and very French view of Montmartre by Maurice-Henri Hensel (1890-1958), perfectly in the tradition of masters such as Chaim Soutine and Maurice Utrillo. Indeed - compare the scene to Utrillo's "Rue Corot" of which I am attaching a photo. It was painted just a few hundred yards down the road from the scene depicted here!

Maurice Hensel specialised in depicting Montmartre and is inhabitants, which was at the time of his life still a working glass district with a thriving artist's community. Interestingly, like Gauguin, he also painted in Tahiti.

He regularly showed his work at the Salon d'Automne and held several solo shows at mythical Galerie Bernheim Jeune in Paris, dealers to Pierre Bonnard, Édouard Vuillard, Paul Cézanne, Henri-Edmond Cross, Kees van Dongen, Henri Matisse, Le Douanier Rousseau, Raoul Dufy, Maurice de Vlaminck, Amedeo Modigliani and Maurice Utrillo.

Hensel also exhibited with the the avant garde Galerie Berthe Weill, credited with producing the first sales in Paris for Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse, and with providing Amedeo Modigliani with the only solo exhibition in his lifetime. His work was moreover shown at the Galerie Terrisse, alongside Max Jacob.

The painting by Maurice Hensel presented here in an oil on canvas measuring 55 x 46 cm. It is signed and dated indistinctly 195(?) to the lower left, and situated "rue Vincent" on the stretcher. The overall framed size in its original wood carved frame is 73 x 64 cm.
