A wonderfully detailed naval watercolour by William Joy of Great Yarmouth. William was the elder of two Joy brothers and often pained with his brother John Cantiloe.
The brothers moved from Norfolk having exhibited with the Norwich School, where they undertook a wide range of commissions for clients and patron. They moved to Chichester where they both ended their days.
The present piece has two naval vessels anchored, with the fleet in behind. Sails being stowed with crew in the rigging and a tender in the foreground (a particular trait of Joy's work). The work is sepia with watercolour.
The picture is in excellent condition in a line washed mount to a gilt frame (Frame 69x53 cm
