A gorgeous colourist landscape dating from the art deco period, by a very modern French woman artist, Odette Pauvert (1903- 1966). Having intially studied with her mother Louise, also a painter, Odette entered the National Academy of Fine Arts in Paris aged 18, and almost immediately achieved
distinction. She was awarded the Jauvin d’Attainville Prize in 1922, and in the same year
started showing her work at the extremely select Paris Salon. She promptly obtained a
bronze medal in 1924, silver medals in 1923 and 1926, and finally a gold medal in 1928.
In 1925, by unanimous decision minus two votes – those of Forain and Besnard, two
particularly misogynistic members of the jury (who believed women had no right to claim
such awards) she was the first woman painter ever to receive the Grand Prix de Rome for
painting, and along with it, a stipend to work and study at the Villa Medici. When Odette
arrived at there, she was the only female resident!
It was during her time in Rome that she painted this vibrant and warm southern landscape which I am
delighted to be able to present to you. An oil on board measuring 50 x 60 cm, the painting signed and dated 1927 at the lower right. The overall framed size is 65 x 87 cm
A retrospective of Odette Pauvert’s work held at the museum of Poitiers in 1986. Sotheby’s Paris recently offered a work by her with an estimate of €10.000-15.000, which makes us
hope that her art is slowly beginning to receive the attention it deserves.
