Description

For centuries, visual artists have loved depicting the colourful and mysterious characters of the Italian Comedia dell'Arte. Here is a modernist take on them, dating from the very early 1960s. The artwork is indistinctly signed, and very likely an early work by French artist Maurice Matieu (1934-2017). A mathematician by training, Matieu chose to become a painter in 1959 and held his first exhibition at the Galerie Maeght in 1965.

Solo shows in museums and private galleries in France, Germany and Belgium were to follow.

Matieu showed his work at Salon de Mai and the Salon de la Jeune Peinture in the 1960s and 1970s.

Painted in gouache on paper, the artwork is signed at the lower right and dated 1961. Measuring 36 x 52 cm at sight, the overall size with its original frame is 51 x 69 cm.
