An exciting modernist work by the acclaimed Italian-Norwegian artist Gino Luigi Ettore Scarpa. While the painting appears almost entirely abstract close-up, it is easy to see three boats on quiet water under a diaphanous sky.

Scarpa was born in Venice, where he also grew up. He studied architecture in Venice, and printmaking in Malmö. He worked several years as mountain guide in the Dolomites, until he moved to Copenhagen in 1958, where he established himself as a full-time artist. Working as a painted, sculptor, printmaker and designer, he was represented at the Venice Biennale twice, and participated in international exhibitions in New York, San Francisco, Detroit, Kentucky, Chicago, Rome, Venice, Florence, Brussels, Paris, Belgrade, Copenhagen, Basel, Düsseldorf, Cologne,

He moved to Oslo in 1970, and became a Norwegian citizen in 1978. Works by the artist can be found in the National Gallery of Norway, Norwegian Museum of Contemporary Art in Oslo, the Museo Internazionale d'Arte Moderna in Venice, and others.

Our mixed media painting, combining gouache with collage and cut-outs, is signed at the lower right and measures 48 x 63 cm. It is presented in its original mount and frame, the glazing of which should be replaced. I prefer to leave it unglazed for the time being, so to facilitate shipping. The back of the frames bears an (exhibition?) number and date. The overall framed size is 67 x 82 cm
