Description

A charming 19th-century landscape painting depicting a nun holding a bible as she walks through a wooded area. The artist, Harald Schumacher (1836-1912), has captured a quiet moment of contemplation within a picturesque rural setting.

Schumacher was born in Copenhagen and trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. He was predominantly a landscape painter.

The painting is monogrammed in the lower right and housed within a later vintage frame.

Medium: Oil on canvas

Overall size: 21” x 23” / 53cm x 58cm

Year of creation: c. 1870

Provenance: Denmark

Condition: A little tatty with some paint loss in the lower areas and craquelure throughout. Frame with some age-related wear.

Artist’s auction highlight: £3,447 achieved for ‘En lille dreng med en fiskestang på en bro i et vidtstrakt landskab’ at auction in 2002.
