If you love the jungle paintings by Le Douanier Rousseau, this is the painting for you! I have seen few modern masters achieve such luminosity and harmony as Jean-Claude Edouard in this work from the mid 1960s. Synthesist in style, it focusses on the purity of line, colour and form. The result is joyous. It is also a wonderful example of mind over matter. Clearly, Jean Edouard wanted the tree which you see to the right on the canvas ... entirely. And so, he extended the central stretcher bar to expand; for it to fit. The result is a canvas of slightly curved shape, which I think is absolutely glorious.

Jean Edouard was born on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe, which perhaps explains his extraordinary sense of colour. He arrived on the French mainland aged 17, to study at the Montparnasse art academies , and prepare the entrance exam to the National Fine Art Academy. He would later settle in Brittany, but exhibit internationally, in Germany, Switzerland, and London. In Paris, his work has been shown at the Grand Palais and in numerous private galleries. He is a member of the Taylor Foundation.

The oil on canvas presented here is a rare early work from his Parisian period. It was acquired by the previous owners in 1967. Please feel free to view our other listing for a second painting by jean Claude Edouard, from the same collection.

Measuring 73 x 54 cm, it is signed at the lower left. The overall framed size in a simple natural wood box frame (which shows off the curve!) is 78 x 59.5 cm
