Large Japanese Bronze Elephant And Tiger Okimono By Maruki Company

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Steve Sly Japanese Works of Art

As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this fine quality Meiji period 1868-1912, Japanese bronze okimono of an elephant and tigers upon a beautiful burr wood base, the group is quite unusual in that the second tiger is not attached to the elephant, but rather a separate okimono in its own right, the artist Atsuyoshi has captured the large elephant stamping down on one tiger under his left foot whilst attempting to keep the other at bay, it looks like he might hopefully prevail on this occasion !! , the quality is as you would expect from the Maruki company who were renowned during the latter part of the Meiji period for high quality okimono in Bronze , ivory and other mixed media, Atsuyoshi was clearly a highly skilled and prolific artist working for the company at this time, the group is multi signed by the artist and bears the Maruki company seal.
