A gorgeous, strong and naturalist 19th Century study of trees by the edge of a sand pit. The painting dates from circa 1849, the heyday of the Barbizon movement. It was almost certainly painted in Fontainebleau forest - for reference only, I am adding to this listing the photo of a larger painting by James Cogniet, which will give you a feel for the larger setting.

Fontainebleau forest is right next to the village of Barbizon, where painters whose key interest was landscape and the depiction of country life had created a created an artist's colony. Spearhead figures of the Barbizon movement were notably Jean Francois Millet and Theodore Rousseau. Our oil on canvas is hence likely to have been painted a Barbizon artist. While it is signed, I have not been able to decipher the signature or identify the artist. Measuring 28.5 x 20 cm, the overall framed size in a more recent frame is 41.5 x 32 cm
