Description
An extraordinary Impressionist landscape, painted with loose brushstrokes in rich earth tones. Think impasto creates almost a degree of abstraction. There is a hint of Van Gogh in it, not only in the textures but also in the complexity of of the colours - touches of orange and ultramarine blue. A lone female (?) figure is carrying a burden, a lilac-coloured bundle, across rolling hills, with a mountain backdrop. Unsigned but certainly French in origin, the painting dates from the last decades of the 19th Century, or the turn of the century. It may well be a study for a larger composition, and was likely painted "en plein air", is unsigned and of wonderful quality. Measuring 24 x 35 cm, it is presented, as I acquired it, in its ornate 1870s antique frame, which however has wear and visible repair. The overall framed size is Nous parlons français, und wir sprechen auch Deutsch! Paintings may be viewed in Norwich and in Paris, as well as in London and Cambridge by appointment.
