A quiet interior scene depicting the porch at Ferring Church in Denmark by painter, Harry Kluge (1879-1963). A solitary bench is gently lit via an open doorway as the warm patina of stone walls catches the light.

Kluge was primarily known as a maritime painter but had a fascination for old buildings. He trained initially as a blacksmith before working for porcelain manufacturer Bing & Grondahl.

His interior scenes are generally smaller and feel more personal than his maritime paintings. He also inscribed them with a location and date. Perhaps he enjoyed the liberation of painting smaller studies when compared to his “day job”.
