Description

A lighted flooded room, filled with the warm colours of the South. Henriette Bounin (1901-1980) was from Marmande in Southwestern France, and her origins show in her work. A strong and independent woman, Henriette was in the Resistance during WW2, and opened an art gallery in Bordeaux after the war, which became a major cultural hub. Her own work has been shown in a retrospective at the Fine Art Museum of Bordeaux, which also has work by Bounin in its permanent collection.

The oil on canvas presented here dates from circa 1950. With a trace of signature at the lower right, it is also signed on the verso of the canvas. The work is mysteriously titled "Lou Birol", which may have a meaning in provençal.

Measuring 60 x 73 cm, the painting is presented in its original artists' strip frame.
