A miniature masterpiece by one of the foremost French flower painters of the 19th Century, Henri Cauchois (1850-1911). Depicting a vase generously filled with white and purple lilac, the painting is presented in its stunning original leaf gold frame. Lilac is a flower symbolising love and renewal, and this shines through in the vibrancy of this work of art, to which Cauchois seems to have tended with special care.

Cauchois received his artistic training under Ferdinand Duboc and Alexandre Cabanel. His soft, colourful and lustrous still lifes reflect a strong influence from the great Impressionists of his time. Cauchois' oils are created with layer upon layer of loose and fluid brush strokes. Cauchois exhibited frequently at the Paris Salon from 1874, receiving several awards at the exhibitions including a Bronze medal in 1898, a Bronze in 1900, and a Silver medal in 1904. His painting feature in the collections of the museums of Rouen, Angers, Louviers, Perpignan among others,, and in private collections all over the world.

Painted on a wooden panel measuring 15.5 x 12 cm and signed at the lower right, the overall framed size is 34 x 30 cm.
