Isn't it extraordinary to think that this painting is a hundred years old? Cubist in style, and astonishingly modern, it features a bold colours and a brillant dynamic tension between geometric and stylised objets. It is also extraordinary to think that this elegant still life with apples was painted by an artist who was only twenty years old at the time.

Wilfrid Jasper Blunt (1901-1987) was no other than the brother of Anthony Blunt, the art historian and Russian spy, (who however was only fourteen years old at the time!) The Blunt family were living in Paris, where Wilfrid and Anthony's father served as chaplain to the British Embassy. Wilfrid was educated Worcester College Oxford, where he was an Exhibitioner, but left Oxford after only a year to study at the

Atelier Moderne in Paris to become an artist. By the following year he was an student at the Royal College of Art, London where he received an associates degree in 1923.

Wilfrid would later become drawing master at Eton, after training as a concert singer in Italy and Germany. His paintings are extremely rare, although I have found one in the collection of the Watts Gallery, where Blunt worked as a curator from 1959.

Our oil on canvas measures 61 x 50 cm and was painted in Paris on French materials. It is signed and dated at the upper right. The overall framed size in a more recent frame is 73 x 62 cm.
